Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God;  the skies proclaim the work of His hands.

My first attempt at photographing the Milky way.  The telescope in the corner is the Green Bank Telescope.  The largest land-based movable structure on earth.  It's pretty impressive up close.

This is my favorite photo since I have been following your blog... Care to share some details on how you captured this?

Thanks Stacey. I was pretty excited when I saw the first shot on my LCD.

Tripod mounted camera, manual, ISO 3200, 30 second exposure, 12 mm wide angle lens set wide open at f/4, auto focus off and long exposure noise reduction on.

If you have "live view" mode on your camera use it to find a bright star in the sky to focus on, then turn off live view because live view heats up the sensor and causes noise.

Next time I get a chance to shoot the milky way I'll shoot RAW + JPEG instead of just JPEG because RAW would make an image like this easier to post process.

Next time I won't extend my tripod fully either. Probably just half way and I'll spread the legs out to give it a wider stance for better stability.

I would also like to go to some place where the sky is much darker than this. The light pollution you see above the mountains is form Green Bank, Cass and Snowshoe, but it's pretty cool to have the GBT in the photo.

Thanks again and if you have any more questions just ask.

I don't have a camera capable of this, but always like to know how it's done.. Love photography, but just don't have any equipment with good manual settings... I've got plenty of knowledge on shooting if I ever get the equipment.. LOL

I hear a cool place for night sky shots, if you get out west, is Sedona, AZ
