Winterplace

They talked me in to going skiing this evening. Would it be "in to" or "into"? Anyway, we went to Winterplace this evening. It was 64 when we left the house and 54 when we got there. It got a little cooler when it got dark, but not too cold. It was nice. I was worried the snow wouldn't be any good, but it was some of the best I been on in a while. It was quiet too because they weren't making snow. We also got to visit with our friend Kenny that works at Winterplace and I had a whole thing of curly fries to myself.

51 6th Ave., Saint Albans

Lieutenant Romine checks out the scene of a 2 vehicle crash in front of the fire station. I guess it could actually be called a 3 vehicle crash. The Third car was parked on the Post Office lot. A witness told one of the other firefighters that it looked like a scene from a movie. The van pulled out and hit the white car in the side. The white car then went over the curb running over a small tree and went dangerously close to the Fire Safety House;=) It then went through the parking lot, jumped the curb again and took out a large real estate advertisement. It then went across 6th Ave. again, jumped the curb into the Post Office lot and hit the parked truck. Nobody was hurt and nobody got mad.

This is what happens...

...when you get a haircut at the fire station.

Blue Snow

I went to Pocahontas County today. I wanted to hike down the Falls of Hill's Creek trail to get some photos. When I got there it was real windy, about 13 degrees and was pourin' the snow. I sat and waited for a while because it had been sunny then cloudy all the way there. It did let up snowing but the wind was blowing the snow out of the trees and the snow was about 8 to 12 inches deep, so I decided not to do the falls. I started back down the road towards Richwood and was looking at the North Fork of the Cherry. There weren't very many good places to pull off the road 'cause the snow was so deep. I ended up pulling off just past the turn up to Summit Lake. As soon as I pulled over I knew I was in trouble. I tried to get out right then, but was just spinning, even though I was in 4 wheel drive. I thought, well crap, so I got out and went and looked at what I wanted look at, then ran around in circles and came up with a plan to get myself unstuck. I didn't have a shovel so I cleared a path down to the gravel on the side of the road with my feet. It took a few minutes but I made it. I'm a genius.

Grant Ave., Saint Albans

I was working today as shift commander but I had time to get a couple of quick shots after I hooked up to the hydrant and charged the supply line.

Magic Carpet

Got this shot this morning on my way to the woods to run. I only left a small carbon footprint (the electricity used to charge my batteries, power my computer and for Blogger to store my photo). Hopefully the globe won't get warmer because of this shot ;=)

Gate to the Past

I came across this photo I took in Beaufort, SC at St. Helena Episcopal Church. The knobs are on a gate to a family mausoleum in the cemetery.

Joyful Reunion

I saw this video on Firehouse.com. Part of the article reads "The firefighter crawled on his stomach through the pitch-black apartment, the smoke so thick he couldn't see his hand in front of his face. Somewhere inside was a baby and he had to find her." I liked when the retired Firefighter said "Thank you so much for remembering me."

Product Testing

I think they're trying to figure out which security screen works best against all the fearless cat burglars in Gauley Bridge.

Cathedral Falls 2

I did get a shot this morning that I think is pretty cool ;-D

Cathedral Falls

I went to Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge this morning. I've been trying for years to get a shot of the falls frozen like I remember when I was a kid. I've got a picture of me that my Grandmother took with the Brownie I talk about in my profile. It's not very good because it's a double exposure. If you didn't wind the film as soon as you took the picture you would forget and you'd take another shot and wind up with two on one. I might dig it out anyway and post it just so you can get an idea of how cold it used to get when I was a kid, sonny. The picture shows me standing at the bottom of the falls on a gianormous pile if ice. It was frozen way more than it was this morning. Here are a couple of the shots I got this morning. I don't think they're that great either. The lighting never seems to be right, no matter what time of day you go there. I got one a few years ago, that I like a lot, late in the evening on a very overcast, wet day. That seems to be the best time to shoot it, but it wasn't frozen when I got that shot. I'll keep tryin'. We might get another real cold spell before spring. The kinda square one was taken with my Fuji f100 and the other was taken with my Canon 30 D with a Tokina 12-24 lens.
