Manhattan Skyline

A lot of the photos that I've taken in New York have been taken by other photographers. The great thing about my shots is that they're MINE. It's so cool to look across the Hudson river and see the skyline of Manhattan, especially at night. Our hotel is right on the river across from the World Trade center. Here's a panorama that I made tonight. Click on the picture for a better view. I took this shot with my Canon 30d DSLR and my Fuji f100. This one was with my Fuji. I know that "it's not about the camera", but it's amazing what you can make that little camera do. I'll post one taken with my Canon later for comparison.

Little Pink Houses

I got Matt's comment on my post about coming to New York. Here are a couple. I had to break down and PAY for a day pass to get on the internet. I thought I'd try the "I forgot my wallet" line but I figured that wouldn't work since I'm not at the fire station. This one was taken at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. As soon as I saw the display I thought of the line from "Little Pink Houses" by John Mellencamp."Ain't that America? Home of the free....yeah. Little pink houses for you and me."

We're Off...

...to New York, NY tomorrow. You've probably heard about it, the Big Apple, the city that never sleeps. It'll be the first time for me and my daughter. My wife went years ago in high school. We're all pretty excited but I think my daughter and I are probably more excited than my wife. I think she'd just as soon go to South Carolina where it's pretty much guaranteed to be warm. We're gonna be staying in Jersey City right on the Hudson river across from the World Trade Center. Hopefully I'll get a nice Manhattan skyline panorama. We've already got tickets for the Statue of Liberty. That's the only thing we have a real plan for, everything else we're just going by the seat of our pants. We definitely want to go to the top of Rockefeller Center and I'd like to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and we're gonna try to find some good Chinese food and Pizza and probably eat a hot dog or two. Our friend Merrily brought us a couple of maps and suggested some things to do that sound pretty cool. I wanted to go to B & H Photo (the biggest camera store in the world) but they're closed for Passover. I could go on and on about stuff we want to do and see but we're only goin' for a few days, so we'll probably have to save something for the next time. Stay tuned for a ton of pictures.

Building 82

Our High School Principal

We went to a birthday party at the Glen Ferris Inn yesterday and got to see a lot of people we hadn't seen in a while. Our high school principal is the brother-in-law of the birthday gal. I hadn't seen Mr. West for several years but Kim had seen him fairly recently. He was the principal of Boomer Christian Academy for close to 30 years. The guys at the fire station like to give me a hard time about the size of my graduating class. There were 4 in my class, Jimmy Hutchinson, Karen Baker, Neta West (Mr. West's daughter) and me. We were the class of '81. Kim had 5 in her class, Kim, Manon Shumate, Ginger Long, Stanton Black and Suzanne Epling. Class of '82.

I Don't Know What That Says

Gone, gone, gone

The Imagesmith used a Jack Johnson song for the title of one of his blog posts. I figured I'd do the same. My daughter and I got up early this morning so we could get a good spot for the implosion. We didn't go to the spot we had originally planned on. It was up on the hill above Kanawha Turnpike. We decided we wanted to be close to the boom. We didn't do too bad. Once we got our spot we had to stand about an hour before the blast. My daughter got a video and I got stills. I'll post the video later.

Union Carbide Building 82

Only a few hours left now. My daughter and I went out last Sunday and scouted out some possible viewing locations to watch the implosion. We've decided on a spot with a great view but it's a little far away. I hope we get some good shots tomorrow morning.

Columbia, SC

It was exactly one year ago when I got these photos. We were on our way down to Beaufort, SC to visit my wife's dad. We had stopped in Columbia to get something to eat. After we ate I was waiting on traffic so I could turn out of the parking lot when I saw a Columbia Fire Dept. engine sitting in traffic at a stop light. Just as the light turned the engine flipped his emergency lights and siren on. Being a curious firefighter I said, "man, we'll follow him for a minute." My daughter said, "woo hoo!" and my wife said "hmm". When I turned right out of the lot to follow I looked up and saw a big black column of smoke just a few blocks from where we were. We pulled up right as the engine got there. We parked out of the way so we wouldn't get stuck by the hydrant line and my daughter and I got out and got a bunch of pictures while the guys went to work. The house was in a nice little neighborhood but appeared to be vacant.

Look Up

My wife had forgotten a couple of things she needed at work today, so after I dropped our daughter off at school I headed to Charleston to take them to her. Since I didn't want to waste such a nice morning I figured I'd walk a couple miles around town.
