Hunting Island in Black & White

Nerd alert!!  

These two photos are the same.  The only difference is that the top one is from a RAW file that I processed in Lightroom and converted to b&w with Nik software.  The bottom one is a JPEG that was shot in camera as a b&w with a red filter.  I can't decide which one I like better.  Probably the top one.

Hunting Island Fog

We went out to the beach this afternoon and found some awesome fog.  It had been sunny until we got to Hunting Island, where it looked like a cloud had dropped out of the sky and covered the island.  It made for some great photography.

Hunting Island Storm

A storm rolls into the south end of Hunting Island last Friday afternoon.  That storm had some of the most vivid lightning and loudest thunder I've ever seen or heard.

This is just a simple photo of some of the dunes on Jekyll Island.  I think I make a photo like this every time we come here.  We probably won't be back to Jekyll until next summer, so I couldn't resist making a photo in the almost perfect evening light.

As we were leaving the beach to go back to Bonnie's, a truck with WV license plates pulled in.  We asked them where in WV they from and they said, Milton.  That's just a few minutes west of where we live.  They told us they were on their way to Florida to visit family and where stopping at different beaches along the way.  Pretty cool.

This is one of our favorite beaches.  I tried to do make this photo in black and white on my dinosaur laptop but I think it's giving out on me.  It has a hard time running Lightroom.  It's eight years old, so in computer years....It's old.  ;-).   Maybe it's time for me to get that refurbished MacBook Air I've been looking at.

An Ocean Without Waves

I couldn't decide which version I liked better, so I put up both.  This is a 50 second exposure at f/16 and ISO 100 with a 10 stop neutral density filter.

A "cool" day at the beach last week.  It was windy and probably about 50 degrees.  That's a huge heat wave compared to now.  Right now, as I'm writing this post it's 4.6 degrees.  That's Fahrenheit!

This was another gray, cloudy afternoon  that didn't have a lot of color to begin with, so I converted it to black and white.  I wish I had gotten a little closer to the fisherman.

Jekyll Island Clouds

A storm moved in on us while we were at the beach the other day.  We were playing a very competitive game of bocce, so I was taking pictures while waiting my turn.  The sun was blocked by the clouds and the air was so full of humidity that the colors of the beach and sky were dull and blah to the naked eye, and especially to the camera.   I think the black and white conversion makes it all work out.

Jekyll Island is home to another beach we really like.  It's hardly ever crowded and its got nice, soft white sand.

Black and White Sunday

A couple photos from today that I like (I'm probably the only one).  The trees are at the north end of the lagoon on Hunting Island and the lagoon is directly behind the dunes where I made the photo of the fence.  It was very overcast this afternoon, so that light lent itself to making the photos black and white.
