R J Reynolds Tobacco Company

When we were driving into Winston-Salem last week I noticed a building on the skyline that I thought looked like the Empire State Building.  Once we got to our hotel I went exploring around downtown and found out that the building was the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Building.  I did a little research online that evening and found out some cool stuff about it.  When the building was completed in 1929 it was the tallest building in the U.S. south of Baltimore, MD.  It was also the prototype for the Empire State Building that was built in 1931 in New York City.  Every year the staff of the Empire State Building sends a Father's Day card to the staff at the Reynolds Building to honor its role as predecessor to the Empire State Building.

Icy Trees

Another photo from the ice storm in Winston Salem this weekend.  I like going to new places because I always come home with a fresh supply of photos for my blog.

Winston Salem

This is the first time we've been to Winston Salem, NC.  I didn't realize it was as close to us as it is.  It only took us 3 hours to get here.  I had a nice long walk around downtown after we got here.

Saint Albans Fire Department

We had a couple of extra guys on shift yesterday because of the big snow we got Sunday night and Monday.   From left to right is Luke, Matt, me, Mike, John, Eric and Rex. Mike was getting off shift from the day before and hung around to help is shovel the pad off.  Also, this is my first post from an iPhone.

Winter Star Trails

My first attempt at photographing star trails.  This photo is made from 118, 30 second exposures at f/4 and ISO 1600.  The straight lines are from planes passing by during the exposures.

Firestone

The Firestone store on the corner of Dickinson and Washington Streets got it's sign restored.  It looked good against this afternoons deep blue sky.

Ridenour Lake

I know it doesn't look like it, but there's a 27 acre lake under all that snow and ice.

Snowy Graffiti

The overcast light today made everything look washed out and blah.  I think the black and white worked better on this one.  This is a 5 shot panorama.  Click on it for a better view.

I had a nice walk around downtown Huntington the other day before the ballgame started.  Click here to learn more about the Keith Albee Theater.
